Heifers on Summer Pasture

Young heifers are turned out to lush green grass for the spring. Fields near the farm are freshly turned for spring planting. With bellies full the heifers find a hilltop over looking the farm scape to relax during the warm mid day sun and chew their cud. This small works painting was completed using professional oil paints over a prepped canvas. The composition has a "Z" type flow allowing the viewer's gaze to travel from the slightly off centered heifers, beyond to the structures and soft billowy clouds, then back down to the main subject via a shadowed cluster of trees. I worked in multiple layers with softened distant edges becoming more defined and vibrant towards the mid and fore-ground. The farming areas of New England's Connecticut River Valley have much inspire the artist.
